One Sabbath day as Jesus was teaching in a synagogue, he saw a woman who had been crippled by an evil spirit. She had been bent double for eighteen years and was unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, “Dear woman, you are healed of your sickness!” Then he touched her, and instantly she could stand straight. How she praised God! But the leader in charge of the synagogue was indignant that Jesus had healed her on the Sabbath day. “There are six days of the week for working,” he said to the crowd. “Come on those days to be healed, not on the Sabbath.” But the Lord replied, “You hypocrites! Each of you works on the Sabbath day! Don’t you untie your ox or your donkey from its stall on the Sabbath and lead it out for water? This dear woman, a daughter of Abraham, has been held in bondage by Satan for eighteen years. Isn’t it right that she be released, even on the Sabbath?” (Luke 13:10-16 NLT)
One of the reasons the Lord created the Sabbath was for our rest and recovery. Jesus began His ministry on a Sabbath day in His home synagogue. There Jesus declared that the Spirit of God was upon Him to preach the Gospel and heal the sick. Then for 3 1/2 years Jesus demonstrated the Father’s will by healing all who were sick. Many of those healings took place on the Sabbath day which made the religious leaders very angry. Jesus used the Sabbath to remove burdens from God’s people. The religious leaders however used the Sabbath to put excessive rules and regulations on people which became a burden and source of condemnation. God meant the Sabbath to bring healing not bondage!
When Jesus saw this woman bound it disturbed him that she had been bound for so long. He called her the daughter of Abraham. Take note of that phrase, “daughter of Abraham”, because it is the language of covenant. That Jewish woman who suffered for so long, had a covenant of healing with God. (We know that to be true because God established that covenant when he brought the children of Israel out of Egypt, “saying I am the Lord who heals you.”) That Sabbath day she experienced her total recovery! Healing belonged to her because she had a covenant with God!
Jesus also referred to healing as the “children’s bread” in Mark 7:27. That phrase means healing belongs to God’s covenant children. The New Testament tells us that we are also sons and daughters of Abraham because of our faith in Jesus Christ. So we also have a healing covenant! That means we have every right to believe for health and healing and long life! It’s our bread! Do not settle for anything less! It belongs to every child of God! Do not let religious tradition talk you out of what belongs to you. Take advantage of your healing covenant! It’s the children’s bread! Healing belongs to us!
DECLARATION: I have a healing covenant with God. Healing belongs to me! Jesus took away all of my infirmities, all of my griefs and sorrows, all of my sickness and disease! By the stripes on Jesus back I am healed, I am whole, I am free!
