I charge you before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect angels that you observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing with partiality.-1 Timothy 5:21
“These things” the Apostle Paul mentions here are the instructions on how to show honor to the different relationships we have in our lives. We have those we are accountable to, we have those who may be accountable to us, and we have those who may be our peers. Each of these kind of relationship thrive when you purpose to show honor. Really, honor is what walking in love is all about.
You can pair this entire chapter with the love chapter in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 which describes love’s disposition toward others. 1 Timothy 5 outlines our disposition towards fellow Christians in the local church. It also establishes good boundaries for discipling others in the local church. The older generation honors the younger generation by giving good counsel and instruction.
Do not rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, with all purity”
I have three younger brothers myself and I honor them when I pray for them and offer them good counsel and feedback when they need it. Look out for the younger generation. Give them a hand up in life. Perhaps a life experience of yours could save them time, money, and even a relationship. Honor the young people in your life, they will respect you for it.
